Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: According to the Mayo Clinic, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is ” a complicated disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that can’t be explained by any underlying medical condition. The fatigue may worsen with physical or mental activity, but doesn’t improve with rest.

This condition is also known as systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID) or myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). Sometimes it’s abbreviated as ME/CFS.  The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown, although there are many theories — ranging from viral infections to psychological stress. Some experts believe chronic fatigue syndrome might be triggered by a combination of factors.

Are you Tired or Toxic ?

“Many doctors who work with chronically fatigued patients and those who work in the field of environmental medicine, agree that chemical exposure is a major contributor to fatigue and low vitality. For example, if you review the symptoms of formaldehyde exposure, you will find fatigue, depression, and poor concentration right at the top. The symptoms of exposure to trichloroethylene (found in floor polish, copy machines, carpet cleaner, etc.) include fatigue, poor concentration, and drowsiness, among others. Exposure to toluene, the most common indoor air pollutant, triggers symptoms of fatigue, poor concentration, drowsiness, and headache. ”

The Functional Medicine approach looks into theses “hidden” combination factors as to what may cause CFS.

Here are my top 5 contributing variables to CFS:

  1. Toxic Load: Heavy Metals to Solvent and other pollutants
  2. Hormonal Imbalances from subclinical hypothyroidism to Adrenal Exhaustion
  3. Nutritional Deficiency: From low Iron to low Vitamin D3 and other essential nutrients.
  4. Gut Health: Yeast overgrowth to Dysbiosis
  5. Chronic Infections: From EBV to HHV6

If you are suffering from CFS, and your doctor keeps telling you it is “all in your head” and your typical conventional labs are “normal”, please seek the help of a board certified functional medicine doctor.
