What is Prolothearpy ?

Prolotherapy is a medical procedure that many chronic and acute pain patients, as well as athletes with sports injuries, are turning to because it is used as an alternative to surgery, arthroscopy, cortisone shots, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, and/or chronic use of narcotic pain medications.

Prolotherapy stimulates the body to repair the painful injured area(s) when the body’s natural healing process is not able to do the job on its own.

In most cases, commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory medications and more drastic measures like surgery, joint replacements, cortisone shots, and other therapies may not help, and often hinder or even prevent the healing process.

What are the benefits of Prolotherapy ?

The benefits of Prolotherapy are many, the main 5 key benefits are:

  1. It is a non surgical procedure
  2. General anesthesia is not required
  3. Low risk of bleeding &/or infection
  4. Outpatient procedure
  5. Track record of being an extremely safe and effective procedure
How does Prolotherapy work ?
The basic mechanism of Prolotherapy is simple. What most people are surprised to find out is that the body heals by inflammation. In other words, we need inflammation to heal our bodies. It works because it actually stimulates an inflammatory reaction in the body.

We inject Prolotherapy solutions into the affected injured soft tissue (typically ligaments or tendons), which leads to local inflammation in the injected area. The localized inflammation triggers a wound healing cascade, resulting in the deposition of new collagen, the material those ligaments and tendons are made of. New collagen shrinks as it matures. The shrinking collagen tightens the ligament that was injected and makes it stronger.

How effective is Prolotherapy ?
Prolotherapy has the potential of being 100 percent effective at eliminating pain and sports injuries that are a result of ligament and/or tendon weakness. The idea is to improve function while strengthening the injured area.
What is in the Prolotherapy solution ?
The typical solution contains dextrose a sugar extract of corn typically at concentration of 5-15%,  in addition to Vitamin B12 (methylcobalmin) in addition to homeopathic compounds might be used, at times our Nurse Practitioner might add a lidocaine in order to reduce the pain at the insertion site.
How many Prolotherapy sessions will I require ?
The short answer is we don’t really know it is based on chronicity and individual bases. However, from our clinical experience the average number of treatment sessions is three to five sessions. This may vary depending on the age, the severity of the injury and or disease and the overall health of the patient. The usual time between treatments is 4-6 weeks. This allows time for the body to heal, repair and rebuild.
How much does it cost per session ?
Prolotherapy is not covered under OHIP. The cost per session varies based on many clinical variables. On average the cost is between 300$ to 500$.  An exact quote will be provided after your initial consultation and examination with our clinic director and the nurse practitioner.
